Black Hills Discovery

May 9 - Oct 7

  • Description

The Black Hills of South Dakota are rich with beauty and wonder. From world-famous Mount Rushmore to historic downtown Deadwood, this area is sure to not disappoint. With hundreds of attractions and sites of natural amazement, the Black Hills offer a lifetime of discovery. However, for our Black Hills Discovery Tour, we have carefully selected only the best sites and local attractions for a full, yet relaxing, 5-day journey through the Black Hills of South Dakota. Tours begin every Monday and end every Friday from May 9 to Oct 7.

  • Day 1

You will arrive at the edge of the Black Hills at the Rapid City Regional Airport, where you will be immediately greeted by our staff and chauffeured to the Deadwood Mountain Grand Hotel in historic Deadwood, SD. Here you will have a chance to settle in to your room and spend the evening relaxing or take a walking tour of the famous downtown Deadwood strip where you can dine, gamble or just meander and enjoy the historically rich old west town. Consider a visit to the Days of '76 Museum with Native American and Old West Artifacts including the original horse-drawn "Deadwood Stage." Reservations will be made at Jake's Fine Dining or Diamond Lil's, restaurants owned by actor Kevin Costner. Our limousine will be consistently available for your transportation needs to and from the hotel.

  • Day 2

Our first full day will begin early by taking a short drive straight to Mount Rushmore National Monument where you will enjoy breakfast at Carver's Cafe at the foot of the monument. Time will then be allotted for you to tour the area before we head south on Iron Mountain Road, one of the top 10 scenic byways in the US. We will connect with the Needles Highway and drive through beautiful Custer State Park with roaming bison, elk, big horn sheep, mountain goats and more. After "threading" the Needles Eye Tunnel, we will continue to the Sylvan Lake Lodge for lunch with beautiful views of this gorgeous mountain lake. We will then continue to Jewel Cave National Monument for a guided scenic tour through a section of underground wilderness in the third longest cave system in the world. On our way back north, we will take time to tour Crazy Horse Memorial, a mountain carving that has been in progress since 1948 and will be the largest carving in existence when it is finished. From here we will make our way back to Deadwood for a relaxing evening and an all-you-can-eat Grand Buffet of crab legs and prime rib at the Silverado Casino. The hotel is only a block away so a short walk will get you back to your room to call it a night.

  • Day 3

Our second full day will begin with breakfast at the hotel followed by a short trip on I-90 to the Badlands National Park, a 244,000 acre other-worldly wilderness area with wide views, peaks and pinnacles (meteor scenes from the film Armageddon were shot here). As we enter the park, you can choose to be dropped off to partake in a helicopter tour or remain with the limousine for a drive-through look at the park. We will take a scenic loop stopping at overlooks for photos and arrive at world-famous Wall Drug in Wall, SD. (For those that chose the helicopter tour, we will come back to the helipad to pick you up when you are finished.) Wall Drug has evolved since 1931 into a 76,000-square-foot wonderland of free attractions. Our tour will then take us to Keystone where you will board the 2:30 departure on the historical 1880 train, a one-hour, 10 mile journey on a vintage steam engine through the scenic Black Hills to Hill City, where you meet up again with your chauffeur. In Hill City, you will have the opportunity to tour four local wineries (the Prairie Berry Winery, Stone Faces Winery, Twisted Pine Winery and the Naked Winery). Our final stop will be the Powder House Lodge Restaurant for dinner on our way back to Deadwood to retire for the evening.

  • Day 4

After breakfast at the hotel, we will take to the road into Rapid City for a tour of the Journey Museum, a collection of artifacts and displays that explore the heritage of the cultures and natural environment of the Black Hills. We will then head to the Black Hills Gold Outlet where you will be able to tour the manufacturing facility and learn what makes Black Hills gold so unique. Lunch will be at the Independent Ale House in downtown Rapid City, a local favorite. And just in case you haven't seen enough wildlife, our tour will take us to Bear Country USA, a massive, 250-acre drive-through exhibit featuring over 20 different species of North American mammals including grizzly bears, wolves, bighorn sheep, bison, elk, fox, mountain lions, rocky mountain goats, and more. Ample time will be allotted to meander the walk-through areas, as well, that feature smaller animals and "Babyland". Our tour will then take us a few miles down the road to enjoy dinner and entertainment at Fort Hays, the home of the film set for Dances with Wolves. You will have time to browse the movie set before the cowboy-style chuckwagon dinner begins. After dinner you will get your belly laugh on with the cowboy music and variety show.

After the show, we will drive back to our hotel in Deadwood where you will rest up for departure in the morning.

  • Day 5

A leisurely morning will allow you time for breakfast and a transfer to the Rapid City Regional Airport in time to make your morning or afternoon flight home.
